Charisma – how to develop it
To become who you want to be, you’ll need a little magic! If you’re an actor, you’ll be like a magician - you can become anyone you want to be. Man or woman, an actor has developed his or her physical skills and mental attitudes to a point where it’s possible to become someone else. Now, isn’t that magic? Whether you want to be a successful teacher, an on-line entrepreneur, the captain of a ship, a business tycoon, a commentator on sport or a model on the catwalk, you’re going to need a little magic. So how does an actor manage to do this?
Suspension of disbelief
Actors’ magic is based on their ability to believe they’re someone else. The actor believes that they’re someone else, so the audience believes it too. That’s what will help you. Believe that you can be, do and have whatever you want.
Most of us are playing out a script handed us by our parents, teachers, peers, partner etc. We didn’t consciously choose this script - we just accepted the one we were given. Thus, we ended up playing (being) a character not of our own choice, but one which society and our education appear to have forced upon us.
How will it end?
When Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman were shooting the immortal romance, ‘Casablanca,’ the scriptwriters were busy turning out the movie, one scene at a time. Until Bogart and Bergman were handed the final pages of the script, right near the end of shooting, they had no idea how the story of the movie would finish. So it is with your own life. You take for granted the fact that you can’t change the script you were handed when you were a young kid. However, no matter how difficult or deprived your background might have been, you can break out of this and become hugely successful in your chosen field. How do you do it? Simple – by re-writing your script. However, this requires you to make a conscious choice to change the way you look at things as well as your circumstances.
Be a Wannabee!
Like an actor, you too can try on various ‘roles’, just like you were trying on a suit to see if it fits. If you want to be brave, charming and successful, then you can be. If you believe you have these qualities, others will begin to believe it too. If an actor can do it in a movie or on the stage, believe me, you can do it in your life.
