Getting a foot in the TV door

So, you want to be on television? Is it because -

  • You want to get inside a television studio, in the hopes of rubbing shoulders with a movie or TV star?
  • You want to see, at first hand, how a programme comes together?
  • You are convinced that you have real talent and star potential but don’t know what to do about it?

Try ‘Walking on’
There are plenty of opportunities to get a job as a ‘walk on’, that’s a background artist, also known as an ‘extra’ or a ‘crowd artist’. You don’t need to have any particular talent for this, other than turning up on time, only speaking when you’re spoken to and being prepared for long, boring days. However, you’ll be able to impress your friends by telling them you were in such-and-such a show. Also, any experience of being in a television production is going to be beneficial.

Your big chance
If you look right and the occasion arises, you may even get the chance to speak a line. After that - who knows? It could be the start of a great career. At least you’ll have given it your best shot. If you don’t have a go, you may spend the rest of your life wondering if you could have been a big TV star.

Give it a try
So, if you’re determined to succeed on the box but don’t know how to get started, you could do worse than ‘walk on’ and hope there’s a line, or a least a vital word needed.
