DEVELOP A POWERFUL AND PERSUASIVE VOICE

Valentine PalmerEXTRACT FROM THE BOOK ...

The five primary sounds

1. AH – as in cart
The mouth is wide open – with the tongue flat. To check that your mouth is in the correct position, you should be able to get the first two fingers of your hand (held in an upright position) between your upper and lower teeth.

2. AY – as in gate
This time the mouth is not quite so open and the back of the tongue starts to rise slightly. To check the position of the mouth, try putting two fingers held flat between the teeth.

3. EE – as in seat
For this sound the mouth is almost closed, with the tongue tip behind the lower teeth, while the rest of the tongue is raised. This sound feels and looks ‘wider’ than the previous two sounds. It has the quality of a broad grin about it. For this sound, you should just be able to get the tip of your little finger between your teeth.

4. OH – as in cold
The tongue is flat (as in the AH sound) but the lips are closely rounded and pushed forward. For this sound, you should just be able to get the tip of your index finger between your lips.

5. OO – as in shoot
For this sound, the lips form an even smaller aperture, with only room for the tip of your little finger.

Practice these simple but vital sounds. They occupy a key position in most of the important words and phrases that you use in everyday English. If you stop to analyse how you actually form certain phrases that you repeat over and over in your everyday life, you’ll begin to realise how you’ve been mispronouncing them by bending and squeezing and stretching them for years.

…superbly put together, easy to read and structured in a very enjoyable way. I gained a considerable amount from this book - the breathing, vocal exercises and the importance of focus…this is a seriously useful tool - for managers & staff alike. My favourite exercises were Vocal Kung Fu & Whole Body Intelligence - the best way to spur anyone into action!’ Simon Curran. MD Messagemail business support
