Your true voice – how to find it
First language
If your first language isn’t English, you might find it surprisingly challenging to write ‘how you speak.’ Your written language may appear particularly stilted, unnatural or simply quaint and, to your reader, perhaps even boring. It’s strange because you know the subject you’re writing about extremely well, your English is quite fluent and you’re really passionate about what you’re writing.
So, what is it that holds you back from expressing your true voice?
- Is it because you believe you’re not worth listening to?
- Is it because English isn’t your mother tongue and you think that you might show yourself up?
- Is it because you think that written English needs to be ‘intellectual’?
Passion
Finding your own true voice can be easy and fun. It just takes a bit of courage. Think of a subject that really fires you up, one you’re truly passionate about and that you know a great deal about. Have an audio recorder handy so that you can record your voice.
Best friend
Imagine you’re being asked by your best friend to talk about this subject and then relate to this imaginary person what you know and how it appeals to you. Off you go, chatting away in an easy and perfectly understandable and informative manner. You’re being yourself and you’ve found your own true voice.
Play back
Play back what you’ve said to yourself and then transcribe it onto your computer, leaving out the occasional ‘er’ and ‘um’ or any other minor clinches you think are needed to tidy it up for the written version. Notice that while you were speaking to your ‘friend’ you avoided using long, complicated language, yet you spoke sincerely, enthusiastically and interestingly. You were probably painting ‘word-pictures’ which expressed your passionate interest in your subject.
Read aloud
Read this version out to yourself. How does it sound to you? If you’re happy with this slightly edited version, then realise that this is a really great way to find your own true voice in English or in any other language.
