THE 10 STEPS TO A SUCCESSFUL CAREER IN TELEVISION
EXTRACT FROM THE BOOK ...
What’s ‘commercial’? It’s a phrase used in the entertainment and media industry to signify that a product is ‘sellable’. Just like in any other industry. It’s no good producing the kind of widget that nobody wants to buy. Similarly, it’s no good producing a programme for television that no one wants to watch. Commercial television companies have to sell advertising space and sponsorship and nobody wants to sponsor, or advertise in, a programme that’s going to get a miniscule audience. A national broadcaster like the BBC has to compete for audiences with the ‘commercial’ networks. f no one watches BBC television, the corporation is in danger of losing its charter and the right to use the many millions of pounds collected in licence fees from the public. If you want to succeed as an actor in television, you need to be just as ‘commercial’ as the programmes you’re appearing in. You’re a product inside a product. So, are you prepared to do whatever it takes to make it in television?
Inspiration – perspiration – reward. That’s how it goes in building a career in TV. No different from any other kind of career.
So - you get all excited at the idea of being on television. You tell everybody that it’s what you want to do more than anything else in the world. You start buying the trade papers, looking at the ads and standing outside television studios hoping to see stars come in and out. Then you have to get down to the hard slog of building a career in television. This is where most people fall off the ladder of success before they’ve even begun to climb it. The thing that’s got people onto television and kept them on television is sheer hard work. What does this hard work entail? It could mean studying at drama school or walking on as a crowd artist. It could mean working your way up over a long period of time. Maybe going from small parts to bigger parts and eventually,
if you’re one out of many millions – stardom! The final stage in the process, when you’ve done all the hard work for all those years, is when you begin to get the breaks. Then it all seems worth it. You’re doing what you love to do and being recognised for it!
‘Until I read this book, I didn’t really know how to get started in TV. Going to drama school doesn’t get you into television, but that’s where I want to be. I found this book amazingly inspiring and helpful. I’m already working as a crowd artist and just waiting for someone to give me that all-important first line to speak. Thanks a million.’ Bill Gage.
